Break the vicious circle of emotional-eating.

OVERVIEW

Many young people are facing health problems evoked by stress, which then are reflected on their appetite -- emotional stress leads to unhealthy diet, and unhealthy diet  in reverse aggravates body condition, causing mental problem. Emo-Eat is for helping people break this vicious circle.

HOW IT WORKS?

Take tests and know what to do or eat.
Take a diet type test to know whether one’s suffering from emotional eating. Or, take an emotion test whenever users want to know better about their current states. All the test records will be assessed and analyzed to adjust your the food recommendation.
Order food from meal plan
Check the food plan that’s generated from user’s testing results, history records, and the day’s weather or temperature (which could be customized in settings). And find the restaurant that offers the dish, or order ingredients from the app.
Add eating history
Besides automatic record generated by testing and food order, users can take record of their emotion and food eaten manually, as well as adding some notes. Those records will be combined with other records together, and further generate history analysis for people to check.

EMOTION AND FOOD CRAVING

Study of 200 people in different emotion show that people have specific food craving in different moods. People with more pressure tend to eat in a more uncontrollable manner.

INTERVIEW

5 people were selected on conducting the one-on-one interview. Topics cover 3 aspects about food and emotion.
Keeping healthy diet is especially hard when suffering from emotional stress. And people know little about how to deal with emotional hunger.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The majority of people have little idea on how their appetite is influenced by emotion and how to deal with emotional hunger.
This design is aimed to help people know about and adjust their emotions with food, and build healthier eating habits through emotion control.

IDEATION & EVALUATION

BRAINSTORMING

The brain-storming was based on previous research and interview results, as well as reference to other food-related apps in market.
Then I evaluated the ideas by their importance and difficulty, and decided the four key functions of the app: food plan, emotion control, background knowledge and supervision function.
Take a test to know the diet type.
Follow the Meal Plan to get the right food.
Take emotion-control course to ease from eating impulse.
Record and get analysis of daily meal.

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

Based on the result of brain-storiming, features to achieve are basically confirmed. Then those features were put into different catogories, organized as an Infomation Architecture that would be served as the app’s future frame of functions.

PROTOTYPE

LOW-FI TESTING

The paper-cut protoypes were tested by 6 participants. Then their feedbacks were collected for the fist-time iteration.

WIREFRAME

After first iteration, I began to flesh out wireframes for the main task flows.
Once the user flow and basic wireframes were clear, usability testing was conducted. 5 participants were asked to conduct several tasks that achieve the main function. Questions about user flow and prototypes were asked, and feedbacks were evaluted and used for iteration.
